to happen in a series:
1) You get very high expectations for a character and anticipate nothing less than utter badassery and coolitude from said character only for the character to actually turn out to be shitty and lame to the point where you actually end up wanting them to get killed off as opposed to rooting for them. All your expectations of this character ever being the badass you thought they were and would be are irreparably dashed to the ground.

2) The character in question starts out as the coolest person in the series and one of your absolute favorites before gradually becoming lamer and lamer and more contradictory as the series progresses to the point where you end up just hating that same character more than anyone else in the series.

The worst feelings.

Edit: This isn't referring to a specific series, I just mean in general when it happens.

Katniss in Catching Fire. I thought she was okay until it came out, and there's also the issue of Axel and Roxas in Kingdom Hearts.

I was trying to think of a series of book which did this to me, problem is i usually bleach them out of my mind...

Artemis Fowl series of books did this. Started out really well. Loved the character of Artemis, then over the course of 5-6 books his character completely derailed to the point where he lost all his individuality that drew me in the first place.

The Torchwood series 'Miracle Day' apart from being shite also tended to build up characters really well, only to completely derail them in the next episode.

It is one of my main concerns whenever a company decides to do a spin-off series/movie/game focusing on a secondary character who happens to look completely badass.

Most of the time, the characters aren't so badass anymore. It's really sad, and it should teach us never to ask for more than we get with those things. ; n;

I worry about this all the time, because I have a feeling it's going to happen/may already be happening to a character I love. But I care about them far to much to let bad script writing taint how much joy they give me.

Reminds me of Sasuke from Naruto. I remember at one point he was my favorite character, but I came to hate him a lot.

But now I'm not into naruto anymore.
Which is mostly Sasuke's fault.

Kain Highwind from "Final Fantasy IV" was 1 for me. Everyone praises this asshole even though he betrays you more than Starscream just because he wanted to bone Rosa. The fan favorite, ladies and gentlemen.

Number 2 goes to Mizuki Himeji from "Baka and Test," one of the few likable characters in this terrible series. Come season two, they turn her into Minami 2.0. Did the writers really think one annoying Tsundere wasn't enough, so they had to derail one of the few likable characters? God, fuck this anime!

Option 1 was how I felt about Strawberry from Watership Down. Major disappointment. He had so much potential for both character development and extremely high levels of badassery (especially considering his circumstances and everything he went through), but for all the screentime Richard Adams gave him, you'd think he was just a part of the scenery. Seriously, if he's not going to do anything of relevance to the plot or even provide some comic relief, why the hell even put him in the story?

That's disappointing alright.
Also, when every new show had a new protagonist with the same behaviour and traits of every other hero on every other show that existed prior. Example: impatience, can't learn like everyone else, everything's alright in the end because they're just test driving or what not!
Maybe they use the excuse that most heroes in these youth-oriented shows are, well, young and childish. But variety would be nice.

It's when a character in a series gradually becomes one dimensional and only indentifable by a single quirk or trait.

or the opposite happens, like i see so much shit about something with so many people flipping out and talking about something that i just automatically loathe whatever it is theyre freaking out about
this is what made me not want to read homestuck and watch zim/spongebob and what makes me not want to watch sherlock lol

I've seen this where I'm just beginning a fandom or seeing a series for the first time and I'll see all this "badass" fanart for a character that makes them look edgy and mature and 'deep' and then they turn out to be one of the stupidest characters in the series or nothing like how they're portrayed in the fanart at all.

sherlock is the thing i'm giving up for lent
except it's a lent that happens to last the rest of my life or at least 862589690 million years after everyone is done raving about it

omfg i love how when a new series hits, everyone draws a shitload of fanart but like...it all looks the same lmfao
like when the lorax came out (and kinda still is out) everyones drawing a pic of the onceler looking all psychotic with his goggles and guitar
no ones done that rite

when sherlock and john stop being ugly then i will watch it but until then...

I saw those pics of the Onceler, and though I haven't seen the film, it's like....that scene with the suit lasted only two minutes and he's not even really "psychotic" wtf. Just greedy.

then you can brace yourself for the Hobbit in december 2012 where Martin Freeman plays the hobbit and benedict is the dragon no lie.

Every Shonen I have ever read has created this feeling for me with at least one character, per series. I don't know what it is about the genre in question but a lot of characters start out dynamic and on the path of dealing with their conflicts in entertaining ways...and then become something much, much less then they were when they started. My memory is a bit foggy when it comes to other things at the moment but I feel your pain. I'd say that the latter is worse then the former case as watching a character gradually devolve into 'suck' from such heights is probably worse then having a character hyped and then be revealed to suck. Neither are something you want to happen to the character unless it's planned and explained in a way that's either tragic or makes SENSE.

LOL I thought N from pokemon would be cool at first...there was a Pixiv and DeviantArt fanart explosion of him for a long while featuring him to only look legitimately badass/threatening and then after the games came out, only pictures of him crying and exuding such a ~*friendship*~ aura to the point where those cool pictures of him are overshadowed if not obsolete. I wanted to like this character, but I couldn't take him seriously.

Well now that he's kinda freed from his (father's) influence maybe it's possible
Well he was definitely quirky at times (game text speeding up sometimes faster than normal when he speaks for example xD) but the ending was abrupt for me haha (hopefully things will be cleared next game)

definitely abrupt P:
I can see how N was a disappointment. I stayed as far away as possible from early fanart of the games, so I never saw any of the stuff floating around about N XD
But yes, he was hardly a rival and became rather creepy at times. breathing down your neck.. gotta love it!

It is a good idea to stay away from fanart of a series in general. I spoiled myself unintentionally looking up fanart (though it was also all over the place so it was almost unavoidable at times...it would mean me avoiding Pixiv altogether) OTL
Well, Cheren and Bel were the rivals but their roles were so tiny lol
